Why Change Feels So Uncomfortable – Even When It's Exactly What You Want

Most people assume that if they genuinely want something, they will naturally move towards it. Yet neuroscience tells a different story.
People regularly resist opportunities, relationships, careers, and even therapies that could significantly improve their lives. They procrastinate, avoid, self-sabotage, or find reasons not to take action despite consciously wanting the outcome.
This apparent contradiction makes perfect sense when we understand how the brain is organised.
The Brain Was Designed for Survival, Not Happiness
At the core of the human brain sits its oldest neurological architecture, often referred to as the reptilian complex. Evolutionarily, this system developed long before the parts of the brain associated with language, planning, logic, self-reflection and conscious decision-making and its function is remarkably simple:
Survive.
It does not evaluate situations.
It does not consider long-term consequences.
It does not analyse whether a change is beneficial.
It responds automatically to sensory information and initiates protective behavioural patterns long before conscious awareness becomes involved.
This is why neuroscientists often describe conscious thought as arriving late to the party. Much of what we experience as a "decision" is actually the conscious mind becoming aware of processes that have already begun.
Why Familiarity Matters So Much
The reptilian complex is fundamentally concerned with predictability because from a survival perspective, what is familiar is known. What is known is predictable. What is predictable is of course less likely to contain danger.
As a result, the nervous system tends to favour the familiar, even when the familiar is objectively unpleasant. And this explains why people remain in unhappy relationships, stay in careers they dislike, continue self-destructive habits, or avoid opportunities that could transform their lives.
The familiar feels safer than the unknown. Not because it actually is safer. But because the brain can predict what will happen.
The Lottery Winner Paradox
One of the most striking examples of this principle is seen in some lottery winners.
Many people assume that receiving a life-changing amount of money would permanently improve someone's life. Yet studies and numerous real-world examples have shown that a surprising number of lottery winners eventually return to their previous financial position or experience significant financial difficulties. Why?
Because while their bank balance changed overnight, their underlying neurological patterns did not. Their habits, beliefs, behavioural responses, emotional regulation strategies and decision-making processes remained largely unchanged.
The conscious mind may want the new reality, but the brain's automated systems continue to run the familiar patterns they have always run.
Humans have a remarkable tendency to recreate what is familiar, even when something objectively better becomes available.
The Hidden Power of the Reptilian Complex
Many people underestimate how powerful these automatic systems are. While we like to think of ourselves as rational beings making conscious decisions, the majority of the brain's processing occurs outside conscious awareness.
The reptilian complex and associated subcortical systems are responsible for vast amounts of rapid information processing and behavioural regulation before conscious thought becomes involved. Some estimates suggest that around 80% of the brain's neural activity occurs below conscious awareness.
In practical terms, this means that the systems responsible for automatic survival responses have significantly more influence over behaviour than most people realise. This is why knowing what to do is often insufficient.
People know smoking is harmful.
People know they should exercise.
People know they need to stop worrying.
People know they should feel confident.
Knowledge alone rarely changes behaviour because behaviour is driven primarily by automatic neurological processes rather than conscious intention.
Why People Avoid Therapy
This same neurological architecture explains why people often avoid therapy. Many people understand intellectually that they need help. They know anxiety is limiting them. They know confidence issues are holding them back. They know a fear response is irrational. Yet they still postpone seeking support.
This is not because they enjoy suffering. It is because therapy represents change. And change represents uncertainty.
The reptilian complex does not sit there evaluating whether therapy is a good idea. It simply detects a departure from the familiar and can trigger protective responses designed to maintain the status quo.
The individual then experiences hesitation, doubt, avoidance or procrastination and assumes these feelings are rational conclusions rather than automatic neurological responses.
Why This Matters in Riding
In my specialism, I see this frequently. A rider may desperately want to return to competition after a fall. They may miss riding confidently. They may visualise themselves jumping again and genuinely want that experience. Yet every time they approach a competition, a lesson, or even a particular fence, their body reacts.
Their heart rate increases.
Their muscles tense.
Their breathing changes.
Their thoughts become negative.
This is not weakness or lack of commitment. It is an automated survival response that has been learned and stored within the nervous system.
The rider's conscious goals and the brain's automatic protective patterns are pulling in different directions.
The Critical Difference Between Personality and Programming
One of the most important concepts for people to understand is that these responses are not personality traits. They are not evidence that someone is naturally anxious, unconfident or incapable.
They are learned neurological patterns.
Every automatic response generated by the brain was acquired through experience and is reinforced through repetition. Over time, these responses can become so automatic that they feel like part of our identity.
But they are not identity. They are programming. And what has been programmed can be reprogrammed.
